List of Schengen countries

The Schengen Agreement entered into force on March 26, 1995. Passport and visa control has been canceled within the Schengen area.

As of 2023, an agreement has been signed with 30 states and is actually in effect with the abolition of border controls in 26 states:

* On January 1, 2023, Croatia officially became a full-fledged country of the Schengen area. Can issue Schengen visas and make full use of the Schengen Information System (read more about visas to the country). Checks of persons at the internal land and sea borders between Croatia and other Schengen countries have been cancelled. Checks at internal air borders will be canceled from March 26, 2023, due to the need to synchronize with the IATA summer / winter schedules and its rules.

Agreements with these countries have already been signed, but have not yet entered into force:

• Bulgaria
• Romania
• Cyprus

Ireland and the United Kingdom are not Schengen countries. The UK has announced that it will maintain a visa policy to ensure external security. Ireland refused to participate in order to maintain a visa-free regime with the UK.

Schengen law also does not work in the dwarf states that have not become part of the European Union - these are Monaco, the Vatican and San Marino.

Some countries on the Schengen list have tightened border control controls:

• Germany – with Austria
• Austria – with Hungary and Slovenia
• Hungary – with Slovenia and Serbia
• Denmark – with Germany
• Sweden – with Denmark (border on the Øresund bridge)
• Norway – in ports where ferries from Denmark, Germany and Sweden arrive

The EU legislation does not apply in such territories as:

• Northern part of Cyprus
• Greenladnia and Farrera (Denmark)
• The Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla in Africa
• Curosao Islands, Aruba, Sint Maarten, and the Caribbean Netherlands
• Overseas departments of France

ETIAS system

There is a fairly large list of states that are not members of the European Union, but that have received the right for citizens to cross the borders of the Schengen countries on a tourist visa in a simplified manner. There are more than 60 such countries. In order to improve the security of the borders of the countries covered by the Schengen zone, they are switching to the new automated European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).

ETIAS will track every Schengen visitor and automatically allow or deny entry to the EU. Thus, in order to visit any country represented in the list, you must:

• 96 hours before the planned border crossing, fill out a special online form
• Pay the duty: for tourists over 18 years old – 7 €, for children and elderly travelers – free of charge

Visiting the Schengen countries may be refused if:

• The citizen violated the laws of the European Union
• Has a criminal record
• Stayed in zones of military conflicts

Categories of Schengen visas

• Category A – for transit through an airport to a third country. It gives the right to stay only on the territory of the airport in the Schengen area.
• Category B – for one- or two-time transit to a third country through the territory of the Schengen area. The maximum stay is 5 days.
• Category C is the most common tourist visa, one, two or multiple entries. On it, you can stay in Schengen for up to 90 days in the last six months.
• Category D – National Long Stay Visa (no 90 days limit). Issued in accordance with the legislation of a particular country if there are grounds.
• FTD (UTD) and FRTD (UTD-ZhD) – for transit from the main part of Russia to the Kaliningrad region.
• LTV category – has a limited territorial effect and is issued in exceptional cases. These are short-term visas that give the right to transit or enter a specific country.
