Italy lifts mandatory masks

Since October 2022, the mandatory wearing of masks in public transport has been canceled in the country.

Until at least October 31, 2022, masks are required only in hospitals or other medical facilities.



June 16, 2022

Italy extends the mask regime

The country extends the mask regime in public transport, but removes other restrictions.

The main provisions of the decree signed the day before by the Minister of Health of the country, Roberto Speranza:

Urban and inter-regional transportation: FFP2 type masks are still required on domestic flights, buses, trains, subways, trams and ferries – until September 30th.

Aircraft: Discussions regarding the possible elimination of masks on international flights are ongoing, but no official decision has been made at the moment.

Cinemas, theatres, stadiums: as of June 16, masks are no longer required in cinemas, theaters and indoor sporting events.

Hospitals: Masks remain mandatory in hospitals, nursing homes and healthcare facilities.

Mandatory vaccination of healthcare workers: in force.

Mandatory vaccination of persons over 50 years of age: no longer valid from 16 June.

Entry into Italy is possible without any covid documents. All you need is a passport and a visa.

Italy removes all entry restrictions

The country will not renew a ruling that requires certificates or tests for entry.

This was confirmed by the Ministry of Health of the country. This means that from June 1, it will be possible to enter Italy without covid documents - with a passport and visa.

In addition, the mandatory mask regime expires on June 15 – it is assumed that masks will be canceled in cinemas and theaters, but can be left on public transport.

Italy lifts most anti-COVID restrictions from May 1

  • The Green Pass will no longer be required to enter indoor catering facilities, travel by all modes of transport, enter the stadium or open-air events.
  • The Super Green Pass remains mandatory only when visiting medical facilities and nursing homes until December 31, 2022.
  • Without masks, you can go to shops, supermarkets, restaurants, a stadium or outdoor events. Wearing a mask in these places is recommended.
  • The FFP2 type mask remains mandatory until June 15 for all types of local and intercity public transport, in hospitals and schools, in cinemas, theaters, concert and sports halls.
  • The requirement to complete the Passenger Locator Form (PLF) is abolished. But whether this applies to foreign citizens arriving in the country is not yet clear.

The Italian government is tightening coronavirus restrictions

The Italian government is tightening coronavirus restrictions and has introduced new restrictive measures.

1. The mandatory wearing of medical masks on the streets is introduced! And in public transport, cinema, theaters and stadiums, the use of an FFP2 respirator is required.

2. From January 10 to March 31, 2022:

  • Check-in at hotels will only be possible for "Super Green Pass" holders – those who have had COVID or vaccinated with a WHO-approved vaccine.
  • Urban and interregional transport, including trains and airplanes, will also be available only for those who have been ill or vaccinated with a WHO-approved vaccine.
  • Fairs, swimming pools, museums, ski lifts in ski resorts, cafes and restaurants, even in the fresh air – only for "Super Green Pass" holders (previously it was possible to get in during the PCR test for coronavirus).

3. From February 1, 2022:

  • Due to the spread of the Omicron strain in the country, the validity period of the "Green Pass" covid certificate will be reduced from 9 months to 6 months.

[ ! ] There are no new restrictions for international air travel – a negative coronavirus test is enough.

The Italian Council of Ministers unanimously adopted a new decree tightening measures to combat coronavirus infection.
