December 8 – Constitution Day

On this day in 1992, at the 11th session of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Basic Law of the country, the Constitution of Uzbekistan as an independent sovereign state, was unanimously adopted.

On the same day, President of the Republic Islam Karimov signed the laws "On the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan", "On the declaration of the Day of the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan as a national holiday", "On the procedure for enacting the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan".

The Constitution of Uzbekistan has passed the expertise of specialists from the United Nations, the Council for Security and Cooperation in Europe, scientists, lawyers from the United States, Great Britain, France and many other countries.

She consolidated the fundamental principles of democracy:

• Uzbekistan is a sovereign democratic republic (Art.1)
• The state expresses the will of the people, serves their interests. State bodies and officials are accountable to society and citizens (Art.2)
• The people are the only source of state power (Art.7)
• The people of Uzbekistan are citizens of the Republic of Uzbekistan, regardless of their nationality (Art.8)
• The most important issues of public and state life are brought up for discussion by the people, put to a universal vote (referendum) (Art.9)

Today, the day of the adoption of the basic law of the country is celebrated in Uzbekistan as a national and nationwide holiday. The streets of the cities are decorated with flags, and the capital of the country hosts various festive events timed to this date: concerts of pop stars, exhibitions, educational events, sports and charity events, all kinds of shows ...
